Anyone specifying curtains for a hotel, healthcare facility, or office building will sooner or later come across the question of fire safety. Terms vary, certifications too. It sounds technical, but the reality is simpler than you might think. And it's a distinction that really matters.

What "fire-retardant" actually means

A fire-retardant fabric is one that does not immediately ignite upon contact with fire, does not spread quickly, and does not feed the fire. A curtain made of ordinary polyester or linen does: it catches fire, continues to burn, and can endanger lives in a commercial setting.

Fire-retardant curtains are therefore not a luxury. In a large part of the commercial market, they are simply mandatory.

How does it work?

There are two fundamentally different ways to make a fabric fire-resistant, and there is a difference here that many professionals are unaware of.

The first method is post-treatment. After production, a standard fabric is immersed in a bath of fire-retardant chemicals. The treatment adheres to the fibers from the outside. The result? A fabric that passes the tests, receives a certificate, and is fire-resistant on paper.

The second method works differently from the very start. The yarn itself is modified at the molecular level, even before a single inch of fabric has been woven. The fire-retardant property is embedded in the yarn’s mass, not just on the surface. You can’t wash it out, because it’s literally woven into the fabric.

We call this second type inherently or permanently flame-retardant. And that difference is crucial.

The problem with post-treatment

A post-treated fabric loses its flame-retardant properties when washed. Not after years of use, but after just 2 to 3 washes. After that, the fabric no longer meets the standard for which it was certified, without anyone being able to tell by looking at the curtain.

Inherently flame-retardant fabrics do not have that problem. They retain their properties, even after dozens of washes.

There’s more to it than that. The chemical treatment gives the fabric a slightly sticky feel, which is immediately noticeable in high-end projects. Fire safety may be technical, but the result ultimately hangs in a space where people live and work.

To those not deeply involved, a certificate may seem like a guarantee. In the case of post-treated fabrics, it is not. The certificate is valid on day one. The protection is not necessarily valid on day one hundred.

Our advice

Indetex works exclusively with inherently flame-retardant yarn. This is the result of years of experience in the development of FR fabrics. We do not consider a flame-retardant property that can be washed out to be a true flame-retardant property.

Inherently flame-retardant fabrics retain their properties, even after dozens of washes. In a hotel that washes its textiles regularly, in a healthcare setting with strict hygiene standards, or simply in a project that lasts for years: the protection remains.

And the environment?

Post-treatment requires significantly more water and chemicals than the production of inherently flame-retardant yarn. It is a less efficient process, with a greater impact on the environment. For projects aiming for BREEAM or WELL certification, this is a reason to carefully consider the choice of curtain fabric and supplier.

What does this mean for your project?

If you choose inherently flame-retardant textiles, you’re choosing long-term certainty. The fire-resistant property is guaranteed, regardless of how often the curtains are cleaned. This also simplifies your project documentation: a certificate that retains its value is far more reliable than one that effectively has an expiration date.
