What are the key trends? 

High-performance textiles, such as fabrics that integrate solar energy or improve air quality, are gaining popularity. At the same time, there is a clear trend towards sustainable and recyclable materials, fully aligned with the rise of circular architecture. 

How early in the design process do you consider curtains and textiles? 

Curtains are at their best when they are incorporated early in the design process, along with choices for light incidence, colour palette and the desired atmosphere. I always aim to harmonise fabrics with other materials, which creates balance in the interior. The challenge often lies in finding solutions that are both functional and aesthetic, such as curtains that filter light without darkening a space.

Which technical aspects play a role?

The technical aspects of textiles are largely determined by the function of the space. Acoustic properties, for example, play a significant role: sound-absorbing fabrics make a big difference in rooms with hard surfaces. Additionally, the thermal insulation of textiles is essential, as fabrics can retain or reflect heat, helping to regulate temperature efficiently. Light control is also important, where both blackout and the subtle filtering of natural light make a room more functional and pleasant. Finally, fire safety is crucial, especially in public buildings where certified fabrics are required to meet the strictest standards.

What are the biggest challenges in integrating curtains into modern architecture?

Finding the balance between aesthetics and functionality remains a challenge. Curtains must be visually appealing, but also practical, durable and easy to maintain. For complex designs, such as high ceilings or curved façades, custom solutions are often necessary.

Can you describe a recent project where textiles played a key role?

A challenging project was a family home with a full glass façade, where the balance between light exposure and privacy was crucial. We integrated semi-transparent textile materials that not only minimise sun glare but also create a bright, inviting ambience. What made this project so special were the ‘moving’ roof surfaces at various angles, creating custom-made trapezoidal curtains. This technical challenge led to a refined end result: a light-filled home where residents can fully enjoy natural daylight while maintaining their precious privacy.

What is the emotional impact of textiles?

Textiles strongly influence the atmosphere of a space. Soft fabrics bring warmth and cosiness, while sleek, minimalist fabrics create a modern and professional appearance. The right fabric evokes exactly the desired emotion.

How can curtains contribute to a building’s sustainability goals?

Textiles can significantly improve a building’s energy efficiency. Curtains keep heat inside during winter and block it in summer, reducing the need for heating and air conditioning. Increasingly, fabrics are made from recycled or natural fibres, ideal for circular applications in sustainable projects.
